Applicant Requirements

• English majors who have completed the sophomore year with a minimum GPA of 3.3 may apply for admission to the Arnhold Undergraduate Research Fellows Program.
  • Students should apply to the program in the fall of their third year or with junior year standing. In special cases, students may apply in the fall of their senior year.

Required Application Materials

This application should include:

• A brief statement of interest indicating why you are applying for the Arnhold Program (1 page, single-spaced MAXIMUM)
• Your best writing sample (4-8 double-spaced pages). Submit work that reflects both your writing style and research interests, if possible.

Program Requirements & Expectations

In order to satisfy the requirements of the Arnhold Undergraduate Fellows Program, students must fulfill the following terms:

• Maintain a GPA of 3.3 or higher in English (in the overall major and the upper division).
• Attend one brief meeting with the Arnhold Graduate Fellow in the Fall quarter as well as the Arnhold Program welcome event at the beginning of Winter quarter
• Attend a series of colloquia offered throughout Winter and Spring quarters.
• Participate in the Arnhold Research Showcase at the end of Spring quarter.

Completion of these requirements will earn the student the designation of “Arnhold Undergraduate Research Fellow.”

All Arnhold Fellows are also encouraged (although not required) to attend events hosted by the Department’s centers and specializations, as they may pertain to each fellow’s interests. To find more about the different English Dept. Centers visit the UCSB English Dept. website.
